Preparing for common challenges - Cases and online learning
Case-based Learning
The following are case-based learning modules oriented toward students that address a variety of practical challenges and ethical considerations in global health work. While some are oriented more toward clinical experiences and others toward research, most of the themes are overarching - we find that they all provide thoughtful discussions relevant to any kind of global health activity.
- "Short-Term Global Health Research Projects by US Medical Students: Ethical Challenges for Partnerships" (Provenzano, 2010) These cases and accompanying discussions provide a thorough overview of the common challenges that arise in student global health research, written by Yale faculty and students.
- "Ethical Challenges in Short-term Global Health Training" is an online case-based training oriented toward students engaged in clinical, research or other activities. "This series of cases introduces trainees and others involved in global health research and service to ethical issues that may arise during short-term training experiences abroad. Being able to recognize and navigate these issues is critical for avoiding harm to communities as well as facilitating a long-term, productive collaboration for the betterment of global health."
Online Global Health Learning
- Unite for Site's Global Health University has a course on International Research that is fast to get through and jam-packed with useful advice for the same common challenges that we've heard students discuss time and again (e.g. language, consent, privacy, interviewing ethics). If you are doing surveys or interviews in a community or clinic setting, don't skip this!
